It's time to brush up on your Simlish because the long-awaited The Sims 5, also known as Project Rene, is officially on the way. This has been the longest gap between main entries since the series began. While we've enjoyed numerous expansions for The Sims 4 and its transition to a free-to-play model, fans are eager for a new installment. Each new release in the franchise brings a mix of excitement and skepticism about what features will be included—both new and returning.
Here's everything we know about The Sims 5 so far.
Currently referred to by the code name Project Rene, The Sims 5 does not have a confirmed release window. Developer Maxis announced its development in October 2022 during the Behind the Sims Summit presentation. Lyndsay Pearson, franchise creative vice president, stated: “Over the next couple of years, we’ll continue sharing updates with all of you on Project Rene.”
Based on this statement, it's reasonable to speculate that The Sims 5 might not be released until 2025 at the earliest.
No platforms have been officially announced for The Sims 5. However, it is highly likely to be available on PC. There was also mention of transferring the game to mobile devices, suggesting that additional platforms might be included.
Although there isn't an official trailer yet, the Behind the Sims Summit provided some early footage of The Sims 5. This footage focused on furniture decorating and customization, leaving many details yet to be revealed.
From the presentation, we know a few systems are planned for The Sims 5. One significant feature is an enhanced version of the Create-A-Style tool from The Sims 3. Players will be able to upload custom designs to a gallery for use and further edit them on a more detailed level.
Another notable detail is that The Sims 5 will include multiplayer capabilities. While the extent of multiplayer features is still unclear, players will be able to collaborate on sharing and creating with friends or play entirely solo. It remains to be seen if this will include bringing Sims together in a shared world.
Until EA officially confirms details, everything mentioned here should be considered rumors.
The most significant leak comes from a Reddit post where a user claims to have datamined The Sims 5 map through a leaked playtest build. This map supposedly shows an open world based on Paris, aligning with real-world pictures.
Another rumor involves DRM, with suggestions that the game might include the controversial Denuvo anti-cheat system.
Additionally, object placement is rumored to receive an upgrade, incorporating physics to allow more natural placement. Objects may tip over if placed on uneven ground or if too much weight is on one side.
As the development team indicated, The Sims 5 is still years away from release. There will be many more updates and possibly even beta tests before preorders become available. When those details are announced, we will ensure you have all the information you need.
Stay tuned for more updates on The Sims 5 as we eagerly await its arrival!
